What Can You Run On A 48V Caravan System?

29th May 2026

If you’ve been researching off-grid caravanning lately, chances are you’ve seen more and more people talking about 48V systems.

But what does that actually mean? And more importantly… what can you actually run on a 48V caravan system?

The short answer: a lot more than you might think.

We recently chatted with Caravanland RV Specialist Blake Messenger about the new 48V system technology in the Jayco Adventurer, and why more Australians are becoming interested in the next generation of off-grid touring.

As Blake explains, the system has really been designed for travellers wanting to go off grid more often, do more free camping and spend less time relying on caravan parks.

Modern 48V systems are changing the way Australians travel, giving caravan owners the ability to stay off grid longer while still enjoying the many of the comforts of home.

So, What Is A 48V Caravan System?

Traditional caravan electrical systems have typically operated on 12V power. While effective, they can become limited when powering larger appliances for extended periods off grid.

A 48V system increases efficiency and allows caravans to safely and effectively power higher-demand appliances with less strain on the electrical system.

In the Jayco range, the 48V system comes standard in the Adventurer, while the Silverline, Crosstrak and Basestation ranges can be optioned with a 48V setup.

Combined with high-capacity lithium batteries, solar panels and advanced inverter technology, these systems are designed to deliver a much more capable off-grid touring experience.

The Jayco Adventurer was the first fully integrated 48V caravan system released to the Australian market, developed in conjunction with Projecta to create a smarter and more capable off-grid power solution.

According to Blake, the system delivers “a four times better power system than your typical 12 volt system,” thanks to the increased efficiency and ability to comfortably run higher-powered appliances while travelling.

The result? More comfort. More independence. More time exploring.

What Appliances Can You Run?

One of the biggest advantages of a 48V setup is the ability to power appliances that traditionally required caravan park power.

Depending on your battery capacity, solar conditions and usage habits, a 48V system can commonly run:

  • Air conditioners
  • Induction cooktops
  • Coffee machines
  • Airfryers
  • Microwaves
  • Hair dryers
  • TVs and entertainment systems
  • Caravan lighting
  • Water pumps
  • Laptop chargers
  • Phone chargers
  • Starlink systems
  • Small kitchen appliances

Importantly, many of these can be used at the same time. Blake explains that the Adventurer’s 4,000 watt inverter allows travellers to comfortably run more appliances simultaneously and for longer periods while off-grid.

For many travellers, it completely changes the off-grid experience and removes a lot of the compromises people traditionally associated with free camping.

Running Air Conditioning Off Grid

This is usually the big question.

Yes — many modern 48V caravan systems can run air conditioning without needing to plug into mains power.

That’s one of the major reasons 48V caravans have become so popular across Australia, particularly for travellers exploring remote areas or free camping during warmer months.

The Adventurer range uses a dedicated Dometic 48V air conditioner, which Blake explained allows the system to run directly from the battery rather than constantly relying on the inverter. On a sunny day with good solar input, he noted that the air conditioner can comfortably run for up to 11 hours off grid, something many travellers are surprised by when they first see the system in action.

Blake also noted that in ideal solar conditions, the system is capable of charging the battery from 20% to 100% in around 1.5 hours, helping travellers recover power quickly while staying off grid.

Of course, runtime depends on:

  • Battery size
  • Solar input
  • Weather conditions
  • Other power usage
  • Time of day

But compared to traditional setups, the difference is significant.

Why 48V Systems Are Becoming More Popular

Australian travellers are staying off grid for longer than ever before.

People want:

  • More freedom
  • Less reliance on caravan parks
  • Greater comfort while touring
  • The ability to power modern appliances
  • Confidence when travelling remotely

A 48V setup helps make that possible.

It also improves efficiency, reduces current draw and supports higher-powered appliances more effectively than older-style systems.

For many travellers, it’s the next evolution of off grid caravanning.

Is A 48V Caravan Right For Everyone?

Not necessarily.

A 48V setup is an incredible option for many travellers, but it really comes down to how you travel and what you want from your caravan experience.

If most of your trips involve staying in powered caravan parks, short weekend getaways or occasional holidays close to home, a traditional setup may still suit your needs perfectly.

But for travellers wanting to spend more time off-grid, free camp more comfortably or power higher-demand appliances while travelling, a 48V system can completely change the experience.

A 48V caravan may be worth considering if you:

  • Love free camping
  • Travel remotely
  • Want to stay off grid longer
  • Want to simultaneously use appliances like air fryers, coffee machines or induction cooking
  • Work remotely while travelling
  • Want air conditioning capability off grid
